House of Representation modern house

We’re not entirely sure what this house in Kyoto, Japan is supposed to be officially representing, but we know it might be unofficially representing that cliche of not judging a book by its cover (or in this case, the inside of a home based on its exterior architecture). Frankly, when we saw the all-white exterior of this home designed by FORM / Kouichi Kimura Architects, we expected the interior to be a little, well, boring. Or at the very at least all white. How wrong we were!

Bursting with dark, dramatic materials like a charcoal gray slate tile floor, deep-hued wood, and a dark gray tile or stone, we’re in love with the level of intrigue they’ve brought into the inside of the home, and enjoy how they’ve used materials to really highlight the architectural angles.

From Architizer: ”This house is planned on a site from where there are beautiful views of the country side. The request from the client was for the creation of intimacy, but with a large living area. The exterior is designed as a monumental form so that I can seem to be a new addition to the scenery.”
